The Three Birds
2002
Written by Joanna Laurens. Directed by Sam Gold. U.S. Premiere.
Produced by Nest Arts. Presented at GAle GAtes et al., 37 Main Street, DUMBO Brooklyn.
Based on the lost Sophocles play, Tereus, The Three Birds beautifully explores the extremes of love, as two Athenian sisters are pulled apart by a man who marries one but desires the other. The Three Birds had its world premiere at the Gate Theatre, London, where The Guardian named it among the Top Ten of the year.
"Ingeniously staged by the director Sam Gold and the set designer Andrew Lieberman ... Laurens's script maddens and compels" - The New Yorker
"What is most extraordinary is how passionately one feels about having discovered two such promising artists, playwright Laurens and director Gold, in a tiny theater in Brooklyn." - Andy Probst, AmericanTheatre
